The annual showcase of the sector’s skills returned to the University of Warwick this year, the first Competitions event since pre-Covid.

The 2024 Competitions featured five new challenges – Best Burger, Innovative Breakfast, Love British Food, Seafood Skills and Vegan - as well as some of the favourites returning – Barista, Chefs’ Challenge and Mixology.

Phil Rees-Jones, TUCO Chair, says: “We’re delighted that our annual skills competitions could return for 2024, and they were back with a bang! There was a fantastic range of skills on show from all competitors, and I was delighted to see strong levels of support shown by their colleagues contributing to a great atmosphere. Congratulations to all the winners.”

Mike Haslin, TUCO CEO, says: “After a tumultuous few years, the return of the Competitions was a great opportunity to bring together the TUCO Family in an environment that could really showcase the new and existing talent within our industry. It was a fantastic few days, displaying the very best chefs, mixologists, and baristas. The next event on the TUCO calendar is the Summer Conference, we look forward to seeing you there.”

Winner of the Seafood Challenge, Janet Szypillo from the University of Exeter, says: “I’m really shocked. I’ve been doing this a long time and previously won silver and bronze in the Competitions, but this one was missing. I think what put my dish ahead of the others was presentation, and hopefully taste."
