At the recent Farm to Fork Summit, prime minister Rishi Sunak announced support for horticulture sector, alongside the publication of the government's first UK Food Security Index.

The index sets out how government will track UK-wide food security on an annual basis, by monitoring domestic food production, land use, input costs and farmer productivity. 

The report highlights the lower amount of fruit and vegetables produced in the UK relative to other products - we only produce 17% of what we consume in fruit, and only 55% of fresh vegetables. The blueprint details the government’s ambitions to increase domestic fruit and vegetable production and grow the fresh produce sector and showcases the initial steps government will take to deliver these aims, boosting UK food security.
